General Garden Care

  • Put out food and water for birds
  • Put up bird boxes
  • Apply fertiliser to beds and borders
  • Tool and machine maintanence
  • Buy in compost and seed trays

Vegetables and Herbs

  • Prepare seedbeds for planting
  • Cover with cloches to warm up the soil
  • Apply an organic fertiliser
  • Lime areas for brassicas
  • Harvest - Brussel sprouts, kale, leeks, parsnips, spinach, swedes, turnip, turnip tops, winter greens.
  • Sow indoors - Onions, broad beans, carrot, cauliflower, lettuce, peas, radish, spinach, spring onions, summer cabbages, turnips.
  • Start chitting early potatoes to plant out from march.
  • Check on any forced chicory
  • Sow outside under cloches- lettuce, radish, salad onions, peas, broad beans, beetroot, summer cabbage, spinach
  • Plant outside - Shallots, Jerusalem Artichoke
  • Prepare trenches for runner beans
  • Prepare a bed for asparagus
  • Feed spring cabbages
  • Take root cuttings of mint
  • Top dress any herbs in containers

Perennials

  • Finish weeding and digging
  • Feed the borders with fertiliser
  • Take root cuttings from acanthus, japanese anemones, nepeta, oriental poppies, phlox, primula and verbascum.
  • Start off Dahlia Tubers

Annuals and Bedding

  • Pot on any seedlings sown last month
  • Sow hardy annuals
  • Continue deadheading winter pansies
  • Sow sweet peas outside in southern sheltered areas
  • Pot on sweet peas sown last autumn and pinch out the growing tip

Trees and Shrubs

  • Plant out bare rooted trees
  • Move any diciduous shrubs
  • Prune and train trees and shrubs
  • Feed and mulch after pruning
  • trim winter flowering heathers after flowering
  • Brush off any snow from hedges to prevent splaying
  • Tie in any splayed branches
  • Prune overgrown or mishappen hedges

Fruit

  • Check stored fruit for rot
  • Feed all the fruit
  • Sprinkle sulphate of potash around fruit trees
  • Mulch the base of fruit trees
  • Check ties and stakes
  • Finish spraying with tar oil winter wash
  • Finish winter pruning and training
  • Prune autumn fruiting raspberries
  • Plant bare rooted trees and bushes
  • Plant bare rooted fruit canes
  • Force rhubarb
  • Cloche strawberries for an early harvest

Under Glass

  • Start off Dahlia Tubers
  • Take cuttings from Fuchsias
  • Prune tender perrenials brought in for the winter
  • Prick out seedlings
  • Order plug plants
  • Sow hardy annuals
  • Sow early veg crops

Lawns

  • Avoid walking on frozen grass
  • Try not to walk on any naturalised bulbs as they emerge
  • Dig out lawn weeds
  • Lay new turf
  • Prepare ground for sowing grass seed

Bulbs

  • Start off Dahlia Tubers
  • Divide snowdrops and winter aconites after flowering
  • Plant new snowdrops and winter aconites in the green
  • Pot up lillies for planting out later

Containers

  • Top dress pots with new compost
  • Apply fertiliser

Ponds

  • If you have fish and its been frozen for a prolonged period melt a hole in the ice to allow oxygen in.
  • Dig any new ponds

Climbers

  • Brush off snow
  • Prune late flowering Clematis [Group 3]
  • Prune winter flowering Jasmine after flowering
  • Prune summer flowering Jasmine
  • Plant new climbers
